The 16th December is the ‘Victory Day’ of Bangladesh because Bangladesh has become independent on this day. I celebrate this day every year with great pleasure and joy. I go to the National Memorial at Savar to show respect to our martyred freedom fighters. On this day, we remember those heroic souls of the soil at the cost of whose blood victory has been achieved. On this day I feel great sympathy and sorrow for the martyrs who sacrificed their lives for the freedom of our country in the war. Their strength and courage inspires me. The Pakistani forces killed thousands of innocent people, tortured innumerable women, killed many intellectuals of the country. After nine months of fighting we have achieved golden sun of independence from the barbarous Pakistanis. The Victory Day symbolizes the triumph of justice over tyranny. The sacrifice made by the martyrs will act as a perennial source of inspiration for me to work for the country. The symbolic meaning of the.day is that we have won victory over the enemy, the heinous pakistani rulers.

7.   First day at my college

My first day at college was really thrilling. I shall never forget the day. I entered the college of Dhaka Residential Model College, Dhaka with new hopes and aspirations. The scenic beauty of the college campus was really a wonder to me. As soon as the bell rang, a fair looking gentleman entered the classroom. He was the professor of English. He spoke in a very decent and dramatic way with lucid pronunciation. I found a great difference between a school teacher and a college teacher. The classes having been over, I went to the students’ common room. There were arrangements for indoor games. There were also various newspapers, magazines and journals. I went to college library and wondered to see so many books there. They invited me to have tea in the college canteen. The canteen was crowded with students. They were listening to the appealing speech of one student leader. We also joined them and enjoyed the art of his speech. I left the college with a mind full of joy and new experience.

8.   Gender discrimination in Bangladesh

Gender dicrimination is the difference between male and female in respect of enjoying human rights. It is severe in Bangladesh which starts at birth. Female children, girls and women are all victims of discrimination and widow destiture old women are the worst sufferers. It is thought that mentally and physically women are not suitable for many jobs. Most parents want to have male children so that they can snpplement their family income and help with the domestic work when the parents will grow older. In the existing socio economic set up, male children are best suited to this purpose. So parents think the female child a burden to them. But society will be deprived of the service of the half of the population if gender discrimination is allowed to continue. It will hinder progress. So everybody should treat male and female children equally. Illiteracy, ignorance and superstition should be removed from the society. A general awareness about the evils of gender discrimination should be created among the people. This are the ways how this problem can be solved.

9.   Price hike

Price hike is the rising of almost all the essential commodities available in the market. The poor and the middle class people are the most affected by it. Various reasons are responsible for the price hike in our country. The price hike was caused by prolonged untimely flood in the country. The holy month of Ramadan also contributed a lot to it, because people, during this month, try to by and consume some of these items more than in the other months. The flood has damaged our crops and disrupted rail and road communications. This also worsened the problem. Some dishonest businessmen made the best use of the situation. They earned the illegal and immoral profits at the cost of our suffering. The common people, who always bears the burnt of price hike, reacted patiently. They knew that they were helpless. I felt for the poor people, but could not do anything. The government formed monitoring cells to control the price hike. The law enforcing agencies were deployed to fight against corruption. The import of essentials was enforced by the government through tax-cuts. But nothing seem to prove faithful. However, the government, the rich and the business class people should come forward to ensure proper distribution of commodities. Now we should undertake research work to overcome price hikes in the future.

10.                     Eve Teasing

Eve-teasing is a regular occurrence in the lives of Bangladeshi women. In fact, the entire Indian sub continental region is afflicted with this malaise. Neighboring countries like Sri Lanka, India, Pakistan etc. show similar ratios of eve-teasing. That indicates a certain kind of wrong mindset of men who harbour no respect for woman’s dignity.
Eve-teasing is a traumatic experience for women. It can leave deep psychological scars which can be hard to heal. Eve-teasing has resulted into many unfortunate events in the lives of women. Sometimes, it has made parents keeping their daughters at home away from school or marrying them off at an early age. Paranoid parents concerned about the safety and honour of their daughters can literally ruin their future. Ironically, teasing has dangerous consequences for women and not for men as it can deprive them of their freedom, nutrition and education.
Most often the incident of eve-teasing is blamed on the victims, i.e. women. It is as if males have got license to indulge in any sort of lecherous behaviour and can go away with it. The patriarchal nature of our society has not been able to deal with incidents of eve-teasing in right perspective. There have been plenty of instances when women have come out in open sharing their experiences. Different newspapers and websites keep publishing such accounts that reflect feelings of disgust, insult and scare experienced by women. No one can explain the truth of eve-teasing and sexual harassment better than the female who gave gone through it.
Paradoxically, it is women who often blame themselves for having invited harassment. Instead of fighting back, many women tend to believe that it is their fault which caused them such an indecent behaviour from lecherous males. It reflects how deeply eve-teasing affects women.
The suffers of eve-teasing feel helplessness, anger and frustration at not being able to do anything about the incident. Incidents of eve-teasing can permanently damage the psyche of the victims. It makes them susceptible about anything in life.
In fine, they find it hard to trust people. They no longer feel inclined to trust their male friends. Sexual harassment or other forms of molestations also impact personal and academic development of women. The experience leaves them bitter and cautions for the rest of their lives.

11.                     A Journey By Train

In the last autumn vacation I got sufficient time. So I made up my mind to make a journey by train from Dhaka to Khulna. I reached the station about half an hour before the departure of the train. It was than a very busy time. Rickshaws, motor cars and other vehicles were coming to the station with passengers. After sometime hearing the whistle, the passengers stood in a queue before the ticket counter. I also stood in the line and bought a second class ticket. The right time the right train came and the guard whistled and waved his flag. Everybody tired to get into the train fast. After much difficulty I got into a second class compartment. The compartment was full to its capacity. The train left the station. I looked outside and found the beauty of nature. The train was running through green paddy fields. There were jute and sugarcane plants here and there. They were tossing there heads in the breeze. The compartment presented a good scene. Some of the passengers were talking on various matters. Some were reading newspapers and magazines. Hawkers came to us with their goods for sale. The train reached at the Khulna Station at 11 p.m. I got down. The journey in my heart I bore. It gave me much pleasure. Indeed it was one of the most memorable days in my life.

12.                     Water Pollution

Water, an important element of human environment, is essential for human and plant life. It is next to air. Water can be polluted in many ways. Farmers use chemical fertilizers and insecticides in their fields to grow more food. The rain and floods wash away some of the chemicals. They get mixed with river water, canal water and pond water. Mills and factories pollute water by throwing the waste and even sail boats can pollute water by throwing oil, food waste and human waste into the rivers and canals. Unsanitary latrines in the countryside standing on the banks of the rivers and canals also pollute water. The kutcha drains running into the rivers and canals cause water pollution. Clean water is safe for use and polluted water is harmful for man. Water pollution can be prevented in many ways. First of all, we should make the people aware of the fact that water is next to air. It is called life. Mills and factories should not throw the waste materials and unsold products into rivers and canals. Steamer, motor launches and even sail boats should not throw oil, food waste and human waste into the rivers and canals. Unsanitary latrines in the countryside should not be built on the banks of the rivers and canals. In fine, awareness should be created in the public.

13.                     Corruption

Corruption means dishonest or illegal behavior especially of people in authority present in a country. There is hardly anybody who is not well acquainted with the very word “Corruption”. Today each and every government sector of the country is rotten to the core because of the widespread practice of corruption by the people who are at the helm of power, by the officers, by clerks and so on. Our country has topped the list five times from the view point of corruption. However there are many reasons behind this galloping corruption. Thirst for power, pelf, wealth and money is the root cause of corruption. Greed, avarice and dishonesty, nepotism and favoritism also contribute to the cause of corruption. The consequence of corruption has a far reaching negative effect on the socio-economic condition of our country. It has made the country a bottomless basket. It has corroded the economy, retarted the economic growth and baffled the various development programmes. By practicing corruption the rich are growing richer and richer and the poor are becoming poorer and poorer. The widespread practice of corruption should not be allowed to go uncontrolled. The corrupted people should not be brought down with an iron rod. It should be checked, controlled and prevented at any cost so that the country can get rid of this national malady and see the ray of hope of development and people who are not involved in it can have a sight of relief and hope for the best and better days. They should be rewarded with due punishment. Even their wealth and money can be confiscated and they may be meted with life long rigorous imprisonment. The mass media, the papers, magazines, journals, articles and above all the consciousness of the enlightened people can play a vital role in curbing the galloping corruption. Now is the proper time to raise voice, take necessary steps and punitive measures against the corrupted society.

The beautiful gifts and the colorful nature in the morning remind everybody of the Creator. One feels like to pray to god. An early riser has many advantages. He can start his daily work earlier. He had nothing to worry. He is never in a haste. As an early riser has enough time to work, he can earn more and become wealthy. So, the habit of early rising is the source of health, wealth and wisdom. An English proverb says: “Early to bed and early to rise, Makes a man healthy, wealthy and wise.” So, everybody should practice early rising.

15.                     My Neighbors

We live in society as we are social beings. I have got different sorts of neighbors. Some are honest and some of them are dishonest. Some neighbors are co-operative while others are self-centered. Co-operative neighbors stand beside our family whenever we are in any problem. But some neighbors hardly react to our activities. One of our neighbors living above our flat is always disturbing us. Most of the time they make unnecessary sounds. In order to maintain good relation we never protest their activities. But the neighbor living next to our flat is very much considerate and reasonable. They co-operate with us in every respect. We are fortunate enough to have a good soul like our next-door neighbor whom we can rely on in our need. We maintain peace with him and he also helps maintaining peace.
16.                     Environment Pollution
All we see around us are the element of environment. However, air, water and soil are some of the main elements. But they often pose to be a threat to our life, particularly when they get polluted. They are polluted in many ways. Smoke is usually responsible for air pollution to create health hazard. It mixes with air and pollutes it. Man makes fire to cook food, to make bricks, to burn refuse and to melt pitch. Fire crated smoke and smoke pollutes air. And water is polluted through waste, insecticides and chemical fertilizers, oil etc. Trees are also a useful element of environment. Environmental pollution gives rise to ecological imbalance and brings about natural disasters. We should adopt measures to save environment. We should plan trees and work afforestation. They cause rain and save the air from pollution, soil from erosion. People should be made aware of the importance of using sanitary latrine so that the pond water and river water remain pure. Government should also take steps to remove the factors that cause environment pollution.

19.                      Television its Uses and Abuses
Today TV is the most important mode of entertainment to all classes and ages of people. In the towns and cities, there is hardly any house where there is not a TV set. Even in the villages, we see that wealthy persons have a TV set. But the young generation is badly addicted to it which set us thinking. Though all the programmes on the TV are not harmful, we have to think what it is giving and taking away from our young generation. Young people most often watch the exciting films on violence and crime. They also see the obscene films. All these things leave a damaging effect on their soft mind. If once bad things lay root deeply in their soft mind, it will stay in their mind. They will try to commit crimes and violence in an aristocratic way and it needs no telling that young persons are going astray day by day. They are becoming addicted to narcotics. They don’t like any kind of educative programme. So, the guardian should be more cautious about running TV. They should allow their boys and girls to see only those programmes from which they can derive much benefit and make the right use to build up their career. Again, we should not forget the proverb that forbidden things always taste sweet.
